It is not just the middle of your life
Students are the most sleep-deprived adults in the country, and it shows up directly in the only number they are measured on. Tracking first-year students at three universities with sleep monitors, researchers found that every extra hour of nightly sleep predicted a 0.07 rise in end-of-term GPA. Under six hours a night, sleep flipped from helpful to actively harmful to their grades. The average student in that study was sleeping 6.5 hours. Around 60% of college students qualify as poor sleepers.
Nobody tells them this. They are told to work harder, and they respond by cutting the one thing that was holding their performance up, then conclude they are not smart enough for the course. The distinction almost nobody makes
Being unconscious and being asleep are two different things. Alcohol will put you out, then wrecks the back half of your night. Antihistamines, the "PM" in every drugstore PM product, will make you groggy enough to lie down and then suppress the REM you were lying down for. You wake up having been unconscious for eight hours and feeling like you were hit by a truck, because you were sedated, not rested. Sleep is an active, ordered sequence your body already knows how to run. Core temperature falls. Excitatory signaling gets damped. Melatonin rises on its own schedule. The reason most people can't run that sequence isn't that they need a stronger drug. Glycine
The temperature dropThe simplest amino acid there is, and the one carrying the most direct evidence in this formula. Glycine promotes blood flow to your hands and feet, which dumps heat out through the skin and pulls your core body temperature down. That temperature drop is not a side effect of falling asleep. Glycine is also an inhibitory neurotransmitter in its own right in the brainstem and spinal cord, which is the same machinery that quiets your body down as you go under. Human trials using a few grams before bed report falling asleep faster, better subjective sleep quality, and — notably — less next-day fatigue rather than more.
Magnesium Glycinate
The brake, and a second dose of glycineThe form matters more than most people realize. Magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate pull water into the bowel at a real dose, which is the last thing you want happening at 2am. Glycinate is magnesium bound to glycine: gentle on the gut, well absorbed, and it delivers a second load of the ingredient in slot one. You get both halves of the molecule doing work.
Magnesium itself sits in the NMDA receptor channel and blunts glutamate, your primary excitatory signal. It also supports GABA-A receptor function. Low magnesium is genuinely common in people who train hard, sweat, drink coffee and are under chronic stress, and it shows up as a nervous system that won't downshift.
L-Tryptophan
The raw material for your own melatoninYour body cannot manufacture melatonin out of nothing. The chain runs tryptophan to 5-HTP to serotonin to melatonin, and tryptophan is an essential amino acid. The only way you get it is by consuming it.
This is the deliberate alternative to swallowing melatonin directly. Melatonin is a timing hormone, not a sedative, and most products on the shelf are dosed at five or ten milligrams when the amount your own brain releases is a small fraction of that. Overshoot it and you're not sleeping better, you're shifting your clock and blunting your own production. Feeding the precursor instead lets your body decide the dose and the timing.
One practical consequence: tryptophan competes with other amino acids for transport into the brain, which is exactly why this is taken twenty minutes before bed and away from a protein meal rather than with dinner.
Taurine
The second brakeTaurine acts on both GABA-A and glycine receptors, the same two inhibitory systems already being fed elsewhere in this formula, approached from a third angle. It also helps regulate calcium inside the cell, which is part of how an over-excited neuron settles.
This is the deliberate logic of the whole stack: rather than hammering one receptor with a huge dose of one compound, several ingredients arrive at the same destination through different doors. Lower load on any single pathway, more reliable result.
GABA
The primary inhibitory signalGABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human nervous system. It is, functionally, the off switch. Nearly every prescription sleep drug on the market works by amplifying GABA signaling, which tells you how central it is to going under.
Worth being straight about: whether GABA taken by mouth crosses the blood-brain barrier in meaningful amounts is genuinely debated, and anyone telling you it's settled is selling something. The better-supported explanation is the gut. Your digestive tract holds a large population of GABA receptors wired to the brain through the vagus nerve, and human studies on oral GABA report shorter time to fall asleep and lower stress markers — an effect that appears to run from the gut up rather than straight across the barrier.
Potassium Citrate
The 3am problemThis is the ingredient nobody puts in a sleep product, and it's the one that addresses the complaint half of everyone actually has. Falling asleep was never your problem. Staying asleep was. You're out by eleven and staring at the ceiling at three.
Potassium sets the electrical resting state of every cell you own, alongside sodium and magnesium. When it's low you get cramping, twitchy legs, restless nights and early waking. Is it going to work for me?
